We continue our journey through the Gospel of John in our sermon series, “WordTalk.” Tonight we come to John 1:15–17, the closing section of John’s prologue—where he begins drawing out what it all means: Jesus Christ stands above Moses, above the law, and above every previous revelation of God. First, we hear John the Baptist doing what he was born to do—bearing witness. He cries out that the One who comes after him ranks before him, because He was before him. John points beyond himself to the eternal Word, confessing that Jesus is no mere prophet, but the Lord who existed before all things. Then John declares the fullness of Christ: “From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.” Everything believers receive from God flows out of Christ’s inexhaustible abundance—endless mercy for needy sinners. Finally, John makes the great contrast: “The law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” The law reveals what God requires, but Christ gives what the law cannot—grace, truth, and the full revelation of God that saves. In this sermon, “The Word Who Stands Above Moses,” we consider: The witness about Christ (v.15) The fullness of Christ (v.16) The law and the gospel (v.17) 📖 Text: John 1:15–17 🏛 Christ Church of Mansfield 🎙 WordTalk
