The Tight Turn Around Cone can be practiced every day at practice. Once the movement is perfected, the Player can develop variations of the Tight Turn. The Tight Turn is a hockey skating skill that requires edge control, precise upper body and stick position, and core engagement to be performed effectively. Done properly, the Player will use their edges efficiently to maintain speed while changing directions using a Tight Turn. Essential Movement: Two cones are set up approximately two stick lengths apart. The Player will move in a figure 8 pattern around the cones, using the Tight Turn. The Player skates in the hockey ready position. At each cone, the Player adjusts their skates to an outside edge on the skate closest to the cone and an inside edge on the other skate. The Player puts pressure on the middle front part of the blade of each skate while leaning towards the cone and into the turn. The Player holds two hands on their stick and turns their upper body and stick towards the opposite cone throughout the turn. Segmented Movement: -The Player begins skating in a Figure 8 pattern around two cones. -The Player begins by turning their upper body and stick in the direction of travel. -The Player adjusts their skates to an outside edge on the skate closest to the cone and an inside edge on the other skate. -The Player applies pressure through the middle front part of the blade. -The movement is complete when the determined number of rotations around the cones is complete. Common Errors: -Not using an inside edge and outside edge is incorrect. -Not leaning into the turn will cause the Player to slow down through the turn. -Having weight on the back of the blade of the skate will cause the Player to slow down through the turn.
