The 1 Foot Inside Edge – Backward can be practiced every day at practice. Once the movement is perfected, the inside edges can be used in hockey skating skills. The 1 Foot Inside Edge – Backward is foundational for hockey skating skills and requires blade awareness to be performed effectively. Done properly, the Player will increase their blade awareness and confidence with their backward edges, leading to stronger backward skating skills. Essential Movement: The Player begins in backward hockey ready position with one hand on their stick. Turning their eyes and upper body in their direction of travel, the Player keeps their stick turned toward the inside of their turn. The Player then shifts their weight to one leg, pushes off with the opposite leg, and glides on the Inside edge. The Player then changes skates and repeats the movement on the opposite inside edge. Segmented Movement: -The Player begins in backward hockey ready position. -The Player holds one hand on their stick. -The Player turns their head, eyes, and upper body in their direction of travel -The Player keeps their stick turned toward the inside of their turn. -The Player shifts their weight to one leg, pushes off with the opposite leg, and glides on the Inside Edge on a curve. -The Player changes skates and repeats the movement. -The movement is complete when the Player has completed the desired distance or required repetitions. Common Errors: -Using two feet to turn does not cause the development of the inside edge. -Not bending knees enough decreases balance, stability, and control of the edges. -Not turning the head, upper body, and stick causes the Player to not use the inside edge effectively. -Core not engaged will cause the upper body to collapse.
