We’re visiting a beautiful seaside bakery on the Swedish island of Gotland – just 7 minutes outside the old town of Visby. Själsö Bakery is a local favourite, known for its wood-fired sourdough loaves, buttery croissants, and iconic Swedish cardamom buns. In this video, we follow the bakers during both the night and day shift – from shaping dough at 9 PM to filling the shelves just in time for opening. We also stop by their adorable bread van in Visby and enjoy fika by the sea with vanilla buns, poppy seed rolls, and cinnamon-filled “morning buns”. Translation of the sign (15:23): -We bake artisan bread with sourdough, and to give the bread its delicious crust, we bake it directly on the stone surface in our stone oven. -We use heritage grains like emmer and spelt. Like all the grains we bake with, they are organic and grown here on Gotland. -The rhubarb is grown by our neighbor Eva. -Our tea comes from Gotland-based Kraeku. -For our buns, we only use real butter, and we make our own vanilla custard from scratch. -We bake exclusively with organic flour from Laban Kvarn here on Gotland. -The apple juice, pear juice, and elderflower drink come from Björn at Idolmsgård, located here in Väskinde Socken. -Our cups are handmade by the ceramicist Maria From.
