Numerical analysis of the load displacement behaviour of yielding elements under squeezing ground conditions with DIANA Finite Element Analysis. The most challenging part of conventional tunnelling through squeezing ground with high overburden is facing to rock mass dilation during the excavation of the tunnel. Any good design aims to control this dilation; however, a rigid support system cannot be a good idea, since that causes high stresses instead of high deformation so that the idea of a flexible support system with controllable deformation turns to the best solution. A ductile support system is a composite system, including steel ribs, rock bolts, shotcrete, and yielding elements. Investigating the impact of yielding elements and flexible support systems is a continuing concern within conventional tunnelling through squeezing ground with high overburden. This study aims to conduct a numerical study to examine the influence of the yielding elements on the system behaviour. For this purpose, a three-dimensional numerical model is developed by using DIANA software and the yielding elements are modelled through spring elements. The constructed numerical model will be calibrated on the displacement measurement data from the Tauern Tunnel in Austria, ensuring that the comparison will be based on reliable input parameters concerning test results from the Ruhr University of Bochum(RUB). Further studies should be done to provide the most realistic approach for modelling the load- deformation behaviour of yielding elements which have different types in the market.
