How can diet influence healthy aging? A recent study from the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, with data spanning over 30 years and more than 100,000 participants, reveals that following certain dietary patterns can significantly increase the chances of living to age 70 or 75 with good cognitive, physical, and mental health, free of chronic diseases. In this video, we explore eight scientifically supported diets that can help you prevent non-communicable diseases and optimize aging: the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND), Alternative Mediterranean Index (aMED), Planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI), Healthful Plant-Based Diet Index (hPDI), Reverse Empirical Dietary Index for Hyperinsulinemia (rEDIH), and Reverse Empirically Inflammatory Dietary Pattern (rEDIP). We'll also discuss the negative impact of ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption on longevity. According to research, greater adherence to these diets can increase the likelihood of healthy aging by up to 2.24 times. But what do these diets have in common? A high consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats, nuts, legumes, and low-fat dairy products, along with a reduction in trans fats, sodium, sugary drinks, and processed meats.
