Your stroke technique and breathing must flow with what the body of water is doing. Some people hate it, some people love it. But staying on course is arguably the most important thing one can do in an open water race. If the race is a 1 mile ocean swim and you end up swimming 1.2 miles, you're never going to beat the person that swam 20% less.
