(3 Aug 2004) 1. Wide shot of military courthouse 2. Tracking shot of arrival of Pfc Lynndie England, she gets out of car and walks across car park, accompanied by lawyers, and enters building 3. Pan across journalists 4. Soldier 5. Court building STORYLINE: US Army Pfc (Private First Class) Lynndie England arrived at the military courthouse in Fort Bragg, in the US state of North Carolina, on Tuesday for the first day of a hearing into her part in the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal. England didn't speak to reporters as she got out of a car and walked with her lawyers into the court building. England's lawyers said she is being used as a scapegoat in the Iraqi prison abuse scandal and hope the military hearing will allow them to question higher ranking personnel who they claim are responsible. They will make the case that the 21-year-old soldier was following orders when she was photographed mocking naked detainees at Abu Ghraib prison. Photos made public in May this year showed the army reservist smiling and pointing at naked prisoners, flashing a 'thumbs-up' and, in one shot, holding a detainee on a dog leash. England, 21, of Fort Ashby in West Virginia, is charged with abusing prisoners, disobeying an order and indecent acts. Six charges stem from "the creation and possession of sexually explicit photographs" which army officials have said do not involve Iraqi prisoners. The maximum total sentence is 38 years in prison. England is one of seven reservists charged in the Abu Ghraib scandal. Specialist Jeremy C Sivits, has already pleaded guilty and been sentenced to a year in prison. Another soldier in England's unit, Specialist Charles A Graner Jr, has also been charged with committing abuses. He was involved in a romantic relationship with England and also faces adultery charges. England was visibly pregnant in court last month, and her lawyers have said the child is Graner's. She has been assigned to a desk job at Fort Bragg military base since she returned to the United States.
