The Woman Who Touched the Fringe In Gospel of Mark 5:25–34, a woman who had bled for twelve years pressed through the crowd and touched the fringe of Christ’s garment. According to Book of Leviticus 15, her condition rendered her ceremonially unclean. For twelve years she lived outside the ordinary life of worship. Touch isolated her. Presence endangered others. Under the Law, impurity spreads outward. But when she touched Jesus, the direction changed. In the old order, uncleanness contaminates the clean. In Christ, holiness moves outward and restores. He does not recoil. He does not become defiled. As the Holy One and fulfillment of the Law, He stands not merely under its regulations but as its Author and goal. Ceremonial impurity cannot overtake the source of holiness. Power goes out from Him. The fringe she touched likely bore the tassels commanded in Book of Numbers 15:38, reminders of covenant faithfulness. She grasped the symbol of obedience, yet encountered the One who embodied perfect obedience. The Law had defined her condition. The Lawgiver dissolved it. For twelve years, everything she touched became unclean. In one moment, the One she touched made her clean. This is more than healing. It is revelation. Holiness in Christ is not fragile. It is sovereign. It is not threatened by brokenness. It overcomes it. He does not absorb impurity as though weakened by it. He overpowers it as the living Temple in whom God dwells bodily. She reached in secret. He restored her in public. And in that exchange, the Gospel is seen: God does not wait for the unclean to make themselves worthy of approach. He comes near. He allows Himself to be touched. And instead of being diminished, He makes whole. She possibly had known the prophecy of Malachi: Malachi 4:2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings… (KJV) Why this connects to the Gospel event The key is the Hebrew word “wings”. (כָּנָף — kana) It does not only mean bird wings — it also means edge, corner, or hem of a garment (the place where tassels/tzitzit were worn — Numbers 15:38). So the prophecy literally reads: “Healing will be in His hem.” Verse 1 Twelve years bent low within the crowd Hope worn thin but not worn out Every step a whispered prayer Every breath says He is there Law sewn into linen thread Ancient words the prophets said Healing waits where faith is drawn At the edge just past the known Chorus In the wings of righteousness Mercy flows and I am whole Not by touch but who He is Power meets the hungry soul I reached for what the Law foretold Found the Christ not cloth or thread What the garment only showed Was living truth in Him instead Verse 2 Tassels swaying as He passed Covenant from ages past Blue thread pointing up above Earth reaching heaven’s love I should stain what I draw near Unclean hands and hidden fear But holiness reversed the tide Life rushed in and death stepped aside Chorus In the wings of righteousness Mercy flows and I am whole Not by touch but who He is Power meets the hungry soul I reached for what the Law foretold Found the Christ not cloth or thread What the garment only showed Was living truth in Him instead Interlude If He were only counted man The Law would bind us both just then My touch would name Him unclean Judgment sealing what stood between But holiness is not so weak It does not fracture when we seek I reached the place the Law restrained And found no line He hadn't obeyed I did not pull Him into need He crossed the line to intercede What touched the Holy did not stain The Holy took my weight and pain The Law stood firm yet mercy spoke I was not spared, I was awakened Uncleanness did not pass to Him His holiness came forth and He healed me, he is more than a man Bridge The Law once stitched along the seam Is now engraved inside of me What was shadow stands revealed What was promised now fulfilled No longer sign, no longer fringe The Word made flesh has bridged the hinge Verse 3 He turned and spoke my name aloud Pulled me from the nameless crowd Daughter, faith has made you well A grace no fear could ever tell Not a symbol, not a sign But God with us in space and time From the edge into His rest From the fringe into His chest Final Chorus In the wings of righteousness Mercy flows and I am whole Not by touch but who He is Power meets the hungry soul I reached for what the Law foretold Found the Christ not cloth or thread What the garment only showed Was living truth in Him instead #christianmusic #finishedwork #worshipmusic
