This video is about my first impressions and early experience with the Meshtastic Radio network. I am using Meshtastic devices from Seeed Studio and have already completed a number of projects. Meshtastic works on top of LoRaWAN radio and its main advanatge is that it relays your radio messages in a series of hops to more distant locations. The more Meshtastic transceivers that join the network the better - each can play a role in routing messages. My devices include: Wio Tracker 1110 Dev Board - an open sourced LoRaWAN board that supports up to six Grove devices SenseCAP Indicator for Meshtastic & LoRa - a desktop stand alone Meshtastic Radio Monitor capable of sending & receiving messages SenseCAP Card Tracker T1000-E for Meshtastic - a weather proof credit size Meshtastic transmitter that includes GPS. This is a wearable device. My main project is to configure the Wio Tracker with environmental sensors and a mini card keyboard. I collect data from a Grove BME680 and transit temperature, humidity, air pressure and air quality. The mini card keyboard is from M5Stack and is used to compose messages and the Wio Tracker transmits the messages over the Meshtastic relay network. I use mechanical components from TotemMaker to assemble all of the electronic modules and everything fits into a transparent box with a LiPo battery ready for outdoor use. The SenseCAP Card Tracker can be used to track the location of a disabled or elderly person that wanders off. So far I have received messages up to 4KM away locally with my devices and up to 37KM from remote devices with multiple radio hops. The only advantage of the SenseCAP Indicator is that it has a better LoRaWAN radio antenna but you can replace the small anntenna of Wio Tracker with a larger one for extended range. The SenseCAP Indicator can be connected to eith wifi or Bluetooth networks or devices. The weakness of the Sensecap indicator is that with its ESP32S3 processor it is power hungry but that might not matter if you just use it on the desktop connected to a USB power source. The Senscap Card Tracker & Wio Tracker are more power efficient as they use a nRF52 processor. This processor is Bluetooth only. So what can this radio network be used for? It is a candidate for assisting in disaster recovery as it needs very little additional support. Provide it with a good LiPo battery, solar power and a good antenna and it should work. But it needs other Meshtastic relays to be around. It could also be used to track the location of vunerable people such as people with disabilities and the elderly that wander off. You could also use it to track hikers on a bush walk where there is poor 5G mobile coverage. Another application is to track the location of your small boat. You could also use the Wio Tracker with the BME680 to monitor a local point of interest for its environment including air quality.
