In this sonata from 1777 (London), Johann Christian Bach explored the colours and effects of recently developed pianos. The music dances on the keyboard with transparency and elegance, perfectly suited to the sonority of the Viennese piano. Mozart studied with JC Bach in London, and their close relationship was a major influence on Mozart’s later compositions. The piece exhibits the intelligence and good humour which we have come to associate with the youngest son of JS Bach’s illustrious family.
