Test Context & Considerations: We decided to put ourselves in the shoes of a typical Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV buyer. We figured it would be someone with a family, likes to travel via car for holidays and such with the family. So space and comfort is priority and so is good mileage because who does not want to save money on fuel. Keeping that in mind and this being a PHEV, charging points might be a thing of concern. Remember, this PHEV's concept is EV first, not outright hp and torque. Hence, we set the car up to charge the battery while the car is on the move and the battery hits a certain percentage so the battery will never be flat. You can also force charge the battery when you reach your destination using the engine if a charger is not available. In our minds this is what a typical owner would do when going to a destination by a river or a beach, where finding a charging point would be difficult. Naturally, being an EV first PHEV, it does not make much sense to have a turbo engine as the engine's main job here is to help out when needed. If the person wants more power, there are a couple of good alternatives out there. A 1.5 L NA engine powering a 1800 kg car at high speeds would result in higher revs and louder engine noise. A turbo engine would obviously make lighter work at the same speed and the same weight but it would also incur higher costs in the long term. There are always pros and cons. ===== We took the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV (which is based on the Geely Starray EM-i) on a 7-hour trip round Penang and parts of Kedah to see what's it like to be in this big yet nimble family SUV for such a long period. Would we go insane or would it be adequately comfortable. To our good fortune, it was the latter. The drive was good, seats were comfy, aircon was cool and the car was so quiet I could hear Lyna's thoughts. As a family C-segment (almost D-segment) SUV, the e.MAS 7 PHEV offers loads of space. The advanced hybrid technology, known as EM-i, ensures that you get both power and range. They claim you can save up to 41% of running costs over 10 years compared to conventional ICE SUVs. The cabin feels upmarket for the most part with our only gripe being the lack of rubber or felt sleeves for the door cubby spaces and the storage area below the center console. That would have prevented some rattling noises from our gear. Other than that, the sound system, HUD and screens added to the premium feel of the car. We appreciated the presence of physical button for the AC and wing mirror adjustments so we need to access the screen to get to those features. 0:00 Intro 1:10 Pre-Test Drive Prep/Setup 1:44 Objectives of the test drive(s) 4:00 Early Impressions 5:28 Pantai Pasir Panjang 8:11 Countryside Stables 9:38 The Farm 10:18 Saanen Goat Farm 14:28 About the EM-i Advance Hybrid Technology 16:48 Straits Green 18:32 Acceleration Test 20:49 Final thoughts ===== Song: Arc North - Symphony (feat.
