Towards Feminist Poetics is an essay written by Elaine Showalter, It was published in 1989 in the book "Speaking Gender". In this work, Elaine Showalter talks about Feminism as a theory. Showalter belongs to second-wave feminism and also lived in the Third-wave feminism. Showalter attempts to write something that can give a new direction to the Feminist Theory. Showalter believed that despite many attempts by various feminists from Virginia Woolf onwards, Feminist Theory has failed to make groundbreaking progress. Reason for this being that there is no poetics for feminism. In this essay/chapter, Showalter talks about some key concepts like, "Women as a Reader" which is also called Feminist Critique, and "Women as a Writer" or Gynocriticism. She discusses in detail the subject matter of Women as a writer and Women as a reader, besides talking about three Phases of Feminism, Feminine, Feminist, and Female.
