Did WISDOM TEETH extractions cause his TMD?!

A patient flies over 4,000 miles from Ireland to see Dr. Nick in the U.S.A. for help with his TMD issues. His problems: -tight face -jaw pain -neck pain -choking sensation underneath his lower jaw -temple headaches -exhaustion/couldn't concentrate All of his issues developed days after his wisdom teeth were extracted. He had seen numerous physicians and physiotherapists, as well as a TMD specialist in Ireland, with no real relief, let alone a real diagnosis. His neck and brain were investigated via MRI to rule out organic disease by a neurosurgeon, again to no avail. Nobody could figure out his problem... On Thursday, Dr. Nick ran him through the Neural Occlusion protocols which included objective and computerized measurements of force/time, concurrent muscular activity, CBCT 3D bony imaging and MRI soft tissue imaging of his stomatognathic/chewing complex. He was found to have damaged TMJ cartilagenous disks on both of his TMJ's that were, fortunately, relatively stable and adapted per the metrics, meaning that he was a candidate for DTR therapy. On Friday, his DTR therapy was carried out to shorten his long Disclusion Times, "catching his bite up to the status of his TMJ's" so to speak, and this video was filmed minutes after he was done with the ICAGD occlusal/bite adjustment protocols used to accomplish DTR. Already, his face was noticeably more relaxed and the tension underneath his chin and neck was abating... Time will tell how he fares-let's hope that he will chime in and tell us how he's doing from back home in Ireland! Damaged ligaments which hold the cartilage in place between his condylar head and glenoid fossa were likely stretched and damaged when his wisdom teeth were removed (via his jaw having been overly stretched during the wisdom teeth extractions-this can tear both lateral and medial cartilagenous ligaments of the TMJ-(Piper M., 2014)), allowing for anterior displacement of his cartilagenous disks. This orthopedic alteration changed his occlusion/bite, with resultant excessive posterior frictional engagements in his sideways chewing movements (excursions). This neurologically ramped up his muscles of mastication, with resultant ischemia of the muscles and associated myalgic/muscle pain. DTR reduced his long Disclusion Times, getting him off of his posterior teeth rapidly in his sideways excursions, thusly increasing his masticatory muscular efficiency with a rapid reduction of symptoms. Dr. Nick "caught his bite up to the status of his damaged but relatively stable and adapted TMJ's", confirmed objectively via CBCT and MRI (orthopedic), T-Scan (force/time), and electromyographical (EMG/muscular) computerized data. Hopefully this is the only layer to his pain and he will experience a lasting recovery. Neck issues and other organic issues could be in play with a case such as this... Please note that imaging should be performed prior to implementing DTR therapy in a complex case like this, allowing for objective and informed verification of the condition of the orthopedic TMJ's. Dr. Nick's Center for Neural Occlusion/CNO (www.CNOTMJ.com) is gearing up to train other dentists how to use MRI and CBCT data to objectively ascertain if a patient possesses stable and adapted TMJ's prior to the implementation of DTR therapy. Thusly, it would be wise for a patient to find a practitioner who is knowledgable in 3D imaging (MRI and CBCT) interpretation of the TMJ's prior to having DTR therapy performed on them, especially in more complex and sketchy cases such as this one.
