They say, "When the tide is out the table is set." That is true, but it is a very big table, and when the tide is in, the kitchen is closed. The tide ruled my day in Desolation Cove. Low tide was time to forage and high tide was time to work on my shelter or get other projects done. The tide migrates later and later in the day with two lows and two highs per day. When low tide happened in the early morning, I had all day to collect food and ate well. As the low tide shifted later and later, eventually the high tide dominated the day giving me fewer daylight hours to find food. Sometimes the weather was so bad it didn't matter, with high surf making foraging and fishing impossible. Learning to work with the tide pattern was essential to life on the island.
