The City of the Dead (al-Qarafa) is a 4-mile-long series of Islamic-era cemeteries in Cairo, Egypt. An estimated half a million people live here — their homes in and among historic cemeteries and tombs, some well over a thousand years old. Though the area (also called Cairo Necropolis, or al-Qarafa in Arabic) is known as a slum, the residents are living in an open-air history museum. It's one of those places in the world that you can't quite believe exists.
