While the Bach Fugue for Unaccompanied Violin (G Minor) could be treated with a walking bass line, I tried a half time feel in the bass to allow space for fugue-ish countermelodies in the inner voices. The difference between foreground and background becomes blurred this way, as opposed to simply throwing a swing feel on the piece and having bass, comping, and melody occupy their neat and typical places. It's possible that classical musicians will relate to this more than typical jazz arrangements, (and maybe jazz musicians will like it less.) Leave a comment below and let me know what you think. Whether or not this particular performance passes muster, classical musicians need case studies for improvising in the style of classical music. It's important to recognize that they can improvise using familiar material. Before I got heavily into jazz, I improvised using vocabulary from my classical training, because that's the only vocabulary I had. When more classical musicians develop the types of skills that jazz musicians study, I predict we'll hear all kinds of new creative music. Jazz has a history of drawing from classical composers, but we could see even more of it once improvisation is taught to classical musicians from an early age. In this performance, I think I hear a bit of everything (jazz and classical melodic vocabulary), and perhaps, also a bit of "nothing". That’s partly why I decided to share it. At the risk of being redundant, the single best way anyone improves is by recording and listening back. That's why the loop pedal is such a great practice tool. It gives me the ability to immediately review my timing, rhythm, ensemble, ideas, phrasing, intonation, and more. Intonation always needs work, and for this I plead "guilty" as charged. As Yo-Yo Ma once told me in a master class (paraphrasing) “playing in tune is a lifetime project for every string player”. Thanks Mr Ma. I appreciate the consolation and will keep at it. But the loop pedal reveals a flaw in my playing that's harder to pin down than intonation, something most classical musicians never spend a lot of time honing, and in this performance it's so blatant, I almost didn’t post the video. Do you know what I’m referring to? Hint: anytime you’re working with a longer form, this will be harder to perfect, and it shows up only once within the loop.
