MAP FORUM - 25 January 2022 Fashion Hits and Misses during the Reigns of the First Medici Grand Dukes Dress was a vital component of Medici politics and when used effectively, it promoted the power and authority of the court. On a more personal level, suitable clothing was important to ensure the health and wellbeing of the ruler. Much deliberation, money, and effort went into perfecting the appearances of the Grand dukes and their courtiers. Getting it right was not an easy task. This talk explores some of the sartorial successes and failures of the Medici through ten documents and objects. Elizabeth Currie is a dress historian and author of Fashion and Masculinity in Renaissance Florence (Bloomsbury Academic, 2016). She is currently working on a book on the clothing of everyday people in Baroque art. She has contributed to the catalogues of two exhibitions opening in the new year: Wealth and Beauty: Pier Francesco Foschi and Painting in Renaissance Florence (Georgia Museum of Art) and Fashioning Masculinities: the Art of Menswear (V&A). Guest panelist: Dr. Timothy McCall, author of Brilliant Bodies: Fashioning Courtly Men in Early Renaissance Italy
