This introduction to anarchist philosophy was published by Crimethinc, a nationwide anarchist group with a particularly strong presence on the West Coast, during their heyday and most prolific period of writing in the late 90s and early 2000s. Crimethinc are known for their unmistakable prose style: poetic, dramatic, and evocative language, which many have criticized over the years for emphasizing emotion over concrete policy proposals, as well as for promoting what has been called “lifestyle anarchism”, a method of achieving personal and group liberation by dropping out of society and living on the margins in an urban context, which itself has pretty much gone out of fashion these days. While I might disagree with some of their strategic priorities, the talent of their writers and the visceral immediacy and inspiring, rousing character of their writing is undeniable. Some of my favorite moments reading political writing have been looking through old Crimethinc zines such as this one. Read by yours truly. There’s another audio recording of this essay on Youtube, but it’s inexplicably broken up into several parts despite being released many, many years after the 10-minute limit on Youtube videos was lifted, plus the reader isn’t particularly inspiring. Movie/video footage used in this video in order: Clips from the BBC documentary "The Spanish Civil War" (probably from 1983), in particular Part 5, "Inside the Revolution" The Doom Generation (1995) Clips from the May 1968 revolt in Paris, from the channel of filmmaker David Hoffman: • Watch Europe Erupt In Violent Student... Some abstract clips from near the beginning and end of Zeitgeist: The Movie (2007) You can check out a written version of this essay here: https://crimethinc.com/zines/fighting...
