Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society Chocolate Trains on the Indiana Northeastern Railroad

The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society has an agreement with the Indiana Northeastern to operate excursion trains on the IN. They make good use of that agreement by operating numerous excursions of various themes over the line. Included in some of the operations is the NKP 765 powering some of its excursion trains. For more information about the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society click onto fortwaynerailroad.org On Valentine’s Day 2026 I treated my wife to the Fort Wayne’s Chocolate Train. They operated three of them this day, one at 10am, one at 12pm (noon) and another at 2pm. We had tickets for the noon train. We did arrive in time to catch the 10am train returning to the depot in Angola. They offered us plenty of fresh hot chocolate to drink at the depot and a chocolate parfait or red velvet parfait as a treat on the train. We rode in the maroon car, the Kitchi Gammi Club. It was originally the NKP business car 7. It is a beautiful car inside and we sat on the parlor end with very plush, overstuffed lounge chairs. The train operated north out of Angola on the IN to Fremont, IN. The engine on the north end of the train, IN 2185 a GP30, was originally the Reading 5517, then Reading 3617. When Reading was merged into Conrail in 1976 it became their 2185. It came to IN through Larry’s Truck Electric. The south engine on the train, IN 2216 is a GP7u which began its life as the ATSF 2746 and became their 2216 when rebuilt which included getting the famous “Topeka” cab.
