A musical tribute to Detective Sergeant Peter "Marzo" Meagher (Ret.). 1964 – December 14, 2025. "The Long March Home" is a Celtic Rock and Police Tattoo anthem dedicated to the life and service of Peter Meagher, one of the 15 innocent victims taken during the terrorist attack at Bondi Beach on December 14, 2025. Peter, known universally as "Marzo," served the New South Wales Police Force for nearly four decades. He was a detective described by colleagues as having a "heart of gold," a man who spent his career facing the darkest sides of humanity to protect the public. In a heartbreaking twist of fate, Peter was killed in retirement while pursuing his peaceful passion for photography, capturing the joy of the community celebration by the sea. He was a beloved husband, brother, uncle, and a stalwart of the Randwick Rugby Union Football Club. This song blends the solemnity of military bagpipes with the power of anthemic rock to honour his decades on the "thin blue line." The track concludes with a musical representation of a 21-gun salute—the ultimate honour for a fallen officer. Marzo finished his duty with honour. We will remember him. As we will remember all of the fifteen. LYRICS: Thirty years of blue and white A detective walking through the night He saw the worst that men can do But kept a heart so kind and true They called him Marzo on the beat A protector of the Sydney street With a badge of honour, a heavy load He walked the long and winding road Stand tall, the pipes are calling For the hero who is falling From the Galloping Greens to the ocean shore We won’t see Marzo anymore Oh, play the drums but slow and low For the copper with the heart of gold The final watch, the duty done Beneath the burning Bondi sun He hung the badge up on the wall To answer a much softer call A camera lens within his hand To capture joy upon the sand A jar of lollies, a friendly face A stalwart of the rugby place He didn't know the dark was near When the devil came to the land of cheer. Stand tall, the pipes are calling For the hero who is falling From the Galloping Greens to the ocean shore We won’t see Marzo anymore Oh, play the drums but slow and low For the copper with the heart of gold The final watch, the duty done Beneath the burning Bondi sun He served the state, he served the scrum But he never heard that bullet come Irony cuts deeper than the knife A peaceful man who loved his life Detective. Brother. Husband. Friend. Faithful until the very end. {To be added: Detail... Present Arms! Fire! Fire! Fire! Fire!.... [21 Gun Salute] } Rest easy, Marzo. Your brothers and sisters will take it from here.
