How does an organisation like Community Broadcasting Foundation ensure a wide range of voices from the community are heard? A pool of over 100 people from all over Australia volunteer their time to score grant applications as per the Community Broadcasting Foundation grant guidelines. They receive training to learn about best practice grant assessment and how to bring their unique perspective and skills to the assessment process, while avoiding any bias that may impact their assessments. Each application can be seen by up to 7 grant assessors. Then, once those scores are tallied (according to a strict protocol, including identifying outlier scores) committees like the Development & Operations Grants Advisory Committee meet to look at the scores and ensure a fair process has been undertaken. These committees are a check and balance to ensure applications have received a fair hearing. They then make recommendations to the Community Broadcasting Foundation board who make a third and final check of the process, signing off on the organisation's final list of grants. Melanie Page and Bill McGinnis give us an insight into the committee process and how they approach the important task of assessing Community Broadcasting Foundation grants.
