------------------------------- “Piedade” is the third opera by the composer João Guilherme Ripper, which has in its catalog the operas “Domitila” (2000), about the love letters of D. Pedro I and the Marquesa de Santos and “Anjo Negro” (2003) , on the homonymous play by Nelson Rodrigues, “Onheama” (2014) and “O diletante” (2014), on the homonymous play by Martins Pena. The work is based on the well-known case that culminated in the death of the writer Euclides da Cunha in the neighborhood of the same name. Euclides had become famous with the publication in 1902 of his book “Os sertões”, in which he recounts the saga of Antônio Conselheiro in the Canudos War. On one of his constant trips to demarcate Brazilian borders, his wife Anna da Cunha became involved with Dilermando de Assis, an army cadet, who was then 17 years old. News of the novel did not take long to reach Euclid's ears and the real story still has several episodes, such as the birth of a son by Anna and Dilermando in Euclid's home. The dramatic outcome, which the press at the time called “The Tragedy of Piety”, took place on a Sunday morning, August 25, 1909, when Euclides arrived armed at Dilermando's house, where Anna had spent the night. Euclides came “to kill or die” and, at the entrance, he shot Dinorah, a Botafogo player and Dilermando's brother, in the back of the head. There followed an intense exchange of gunfire between the writer and Dilermando, who even seriously injured, fatally hit Euclides da Cunha. When writing “Piedade”, João Guilherme Ripper sought to portray poetry and musically the tragedy and its characters: Euclides da Cunha, baritone; Anna da Cunha, soprano; Dilermando de Assis, tenor. It is important to note that this is an artistic work and not a documentary about the case. Thus, the composer felt compelled to reproduce the facts exactly, but he tried to delineate from the most relevant episodes the path that led to the dramatic outcome and the death of Euclides da Cunha. --------------------------- Paula Almerares (soprano) - Anna da Cunha Marcos Paulo (tenor) - Dilermando de Assis Homero Velho (baritono) - Euclides da Cunha Orquestra Sinfônica Petrobras Conductor: Isaac Karabtchevsky Stage direction: André Heller-Lopes Video: Angelica Faria English translation: Tom Moore English subtitles ---------------------------
