SUMMARY: In this talk, Dr. Koenig will focus on concerns about the readiness of personnel in the Armed Forces of the U.S. and their allies, and review the mental health problems of those currently serving in the U.S. military. He will discuss the definition of spiritual readiness, and how to measure the spiritual readiness of military personnel. He will then describe nonreligious sources of spiritual readiness, including stoic philosophy, followed by a review of religious sources of spiritual readiness, including an examination of what spiritual readiness looks like in the Eastern, Indic, and Abrahamic faith traditions. He will discuss how warrior readiness is enhanced by human flourishing, and how religious involvement influences human flourishing thereby affecting warrior readiness. Finally, he will then discuss who is in charge of ensuring the spiritual readiness of our Armed Forces, discuss interventions to increase spiritual readiness, and emphasize the importance of fighting with honor in a just war in order to limit casualties due to moral injury that will later haunt combat personnel after they return to their communities and families.
