Music in the 20th Century (Podcast) The Dawn of Modern Sound At the beginning of the twentieth century music began to change very quickly. Composers wanted to find new ways to express their feelings beyond traditional classical styles. They experimented with different scales and rhythms that had never been heard before in concert halls. This period marked a break from the rules of the previous hundred years. New technology soon allowed people to record these sounds for the very first time. The Rise of Jazz Music Jazz became one of the most important musical developments in the United States. It started in cities like New Orleans where musicians blended African and European traditions together. Players used improvisation to create unique melodies while they were performing on stage. Instruments like the trumpet and the saxophone became very popular during this era. People all over the world soon began to dance to these energetic new rhythms. The Influence of the Blues The blues grew out of the deep south and focused on emotional storytelling. Musicians used specific guitar chords and vocal techniques to share their personal life experiences. This style of music influenced almost every other genre that followed in the twentieth century. Many famous songs use a standard twelve bar structure that is easy to recognize. The blues helped create the foundation for what would eventually become rock and roll. Classical Music Innovation Classical composers in the twentieth century decided to challenge the idea of harmony. Some creators used a system called atonality which does not focus on a single key. Orchestras began to include unusual instruments and even household objects to make different noises. Famous pieces often surprised audiences who were used to much calmer and predictable melodies. This era proved that classical music could be just as experimental as modern art.
