Music in Ancient Rome (Podcast) The Role of Music in Roman Life Music played a central part in the daily lives of people living in Ancient Rome. It was heard at many different occasions including public festivals and private dinner parties. People believed that music could influence the mood of a crowd or a single listener. Musicians were often hired to perform during religious ceremonies to please the gods. Even the military used music to keep soldiers in step and communicate orders. Common Musical Instruments The Romans used a variety of instruments that were often based on Greek designs. One of the most popular string instruments was the kithara which resembled a large lyre. For wind instruments they frequently played the tibia which was a double-piped reed instrument. They also used brass instruments like the long straight tuba and the curved cornu. Percussion instruments like small drums and cymbals added rhythm to many performances. Music at Religious Festivals Religious events were major public gatherings where music was strictly required. Flute players often stood near the altar to drown out any unlucky sounds during a sacrifice. These musicians were highly respected and belonged to special groups called guilds. During parades the sound of horns and trumpets alerted the citizens that a ceremony was beginning. This music helped to create a solemn and holy atmosphere for the worshipers. Entertainment at the Games Huge crowds gathered at the Colosseum and other arenas to watch gladiators and races. Music accompanied these violent spectacles to increase the excitement of the audience. The water organ called the hydraulis was often played to provide a loud and powerful sound. Trumpets signaled the start of a fight and kept the energy high throughout the day. Performers had to play very loudly to be heard over the shouting of thousands of people.
