Florida Highway Patrol PIT Maneuver Ends Wild Chase on I-95

Police Report: On 6/20/2024 at 1400 HRS, I, Trooper Elvis Nolasco, ID# 884, a Felony Officer with the Florida Highway Patrol's (FHP) Criminal Interdiction Unit (CIU), spotted a white Mercedes 4-door with dark window tint traveling north on SR 91/Florida Turnpike at approximately the 145-mile marker in the outside lane. I ran the vehicle's tag and registered owner and found that the registered owner had a suspended license and a seized tag order. I activated my lights and sirens at approximately the 147-mile marker, and the vehicle changed lanes to the outside lane. I instructed the driver to pull over to the right over my PA system, and the driver then began to accelerate. I informed my dispatch that the vehicle was failing to stop. At that time, the vehicle began to drive recklessly on the outside shoulder, weaving in and out of traffic. I informed my dispatch that the vehicle had become reckless and began to pursue the vehicle. The driver exited off the 152-mile marker exit and began to head east on SR 70. At this time, Sgt. Jeffrey Pollock, ID# 347, joined the pursuit as vehicle number 2 and took over radio operations. The vehicle continued to drive recklessly through intersections and got onto I-95 traveling south. The driver cut across all lanes of traffic to the left and attempted to make an illegal U-turn across the center grassy median, which caused him to collide with a dark-colored SUV. At this time, I attempted to conduct a PIT maneuver on the vehicle, but the driver corrected the vehicle and began to travel north on I-95, exiting again at SR 70, where I was able to successfully conduct a PIT maneuver. The vehicle began to spin and seemed to correct itself and looked like it was about to continue fleeing. At that time, I made intentional contact with the vehicle to disable it and stop the pursuit. During this time, my vehicle lost traction, causing me to collide with several signs on the exit ramp. My vehicle ended up directly next to the suspect vehicle, and I was unable to get out of my patrol car. I drew my issued handgun and informed the passenger to not move and show me his hands. I was finally able to get my vehicle into drive and reposition myself behind the suspect vehicle. At that time, K9 Trp. Ghermaine Yepez, ID# 1388, arrived on the scene with K9 Uno. Sgt. Pollock, Trp. Yepez, and I ordered the driver and passenger out of the vehicle and took them into custody. Once the occupants were in custody, I conducted a search incident to arrest of the vehicle and found a black zippered bag that contained a white powdery substance that I believed to be cocaine, 12 circular blue pills that were identified as Oxycodone, 4 triangular pink pills that I believed to be MDMA, 17.8 grams of marijuana, and several pieces of drug paraphernalia. Both occupants were transported to Post 5 on SR 91/Florida Turnpike at the 145-mile marker by Trp. William Shogran, ID# 735. Once at the station, Miranda Warnings were read, and both occupants invoked their rights. I asked them both for their identifying information, and they both gave their names, dates of birth, and social security numbers, allowing me to identify both occupants. The driver was identified as DERRICK DANOVON TAYLOR Jr., and the passenger was identified as WILLIAM WADE WOODS. Taylor was charged with reckless driving with damage to property, fleeing and eluding with damage to property, leaving the scene of a crash with damage to property, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana under 20 grams, possession of a controlled substance for the Oxycodone and MDMA, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving while license suspended as a habitual traffic offender. Woods was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana under 20 grams, possession of a controlled substance for the Oxycodone and MDMA, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Taylor and Woods were transported by Trp. Shogran to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center to be medically cleared from the crash. Once cleared, they were transported to St. Lucie County Jail. In Pain?
