FHP 135mph Pursuit of 11-Time Convicted Felon

On 07/22/2024 at approx 1400 hours, I Trooper Brandon Cano with the Florida Highway Patrol I was conducting speed enforcement on I-4 WB MM 130. I was in a fully marked FHP vehicle. I observed a black sedan approaching my location and appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed in the inside lane. I estimated the speed of the vehicle to be approx 95 mph in a posted 70 mph speed zone. Utilizing my speed measurement device, I confirmed the vehicle was traveling 90 miles per hour, at 747 feet from my patrol vehicle. I noted the laser signal acquisition tone was clear and steady, with no obstructions between my laser and the targeted vehicle. I exited the median, never losing sight of the vehicle, attempting to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle. I got behind the vehicle. The vehicle had a FL tag #65ALKH. I activated my emergency lights and sirens and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. Immediately upon, the violator's vehicle came to a complete stop, I observed the driver and passenger switch seats inside the vehicle. I conducted a passenger-side approach to the vehicle and informed both occupants that I observed them switch seats. A B/F who was originally the passenger was in the driver seat and a B/M who was originally the driver was now in the passenger seat. I informed both occupants I needed to see their identification. The male stated he did not have any identification. I then requested backup. The B/M was wearing a black shirt, black shorts, with a gold chain. Suddenly, the female exited the vehicle with both her hands up and the male got into the driver seat, looked me in the eyes, and then fled the scene of the traffic stop. I ran back to my patrol vehicle, traveled back onto the roadway with my emergency lights and sirens activated. I notified FHP SRCC; I was in pursuit of the vehicle. The vehicle continued traveling WB on I-4, traveling in and out of lanes at a high rate of speed, fleeing from law enforcement and nearly causing several crashes. The speeds throughout the pursuit were 135 mph for most of the pursuit. The vehicle continued traveling at high rates of speeds, 135+ mph in and out of lanes and traveling on the shoulder. Trooper Brown joined the pursuit as a backup unit. As I pursued the fleeing felon, he had no regard for his life, my life, or the motoring public's life, showing wanton disregard for anyone’s safety. The vehicle exited at MM 118, traveling WB on SR 44. The pursuit continued into DeLand. As we were traveling WB on SR 44 approaching the intersection of Wade Ave, the violator vehicle slowed down to a speed consistent with my training and experience in order for me to be able to perform a PIT maneuver on the vehicle. I conducted a PIT Maneuver on the right side of the violator's vehicle, which propelled the violator's vehicle in a SW direction. The violator's vehicle crashed into a fence on the SW corner of the intersection of SR 44 and Wade Ave. The B/M immediately exited the vehicle and began running on foot SB on Wade Ave. Trooper Brown and I chased the driver on foot. The driver jumped through a fence and ran into the woodline, where we lost sight of him. With the assistance of the VCSO, Deland PD, FHP and Wildlife Commission Officers, a large perimeter was established. The VCSO Air One responded to the scene attempting to locate the driver. After an approx 45-minute search, Deputy Jevon Garden with the VCSO located the driver at the residence of Pecan Street, DeLand FL. I identified the defendant through FCIC/NCIC as Patrick Bryan Gordon. Records on FCIC/NCIC show the def has a suspended driver’s license. Records on DAVID show the def has three previous convictions for DWLS. The most recent suspension was on 09/27/23 for Fleeing and Eluding. Records on FCIC/NCIC further show the def had several active warrants for FLEEING TO ELUDE HIGH SPEED, DRIVING W/O LICENSE, GIVING FALSE NAME. The def also had an active warrant for TRAFFICKING IN HEROIN. The def’s criminal history shows he has a total of 31 felony criminal charges with 11 felony convictions. Trooper Drach conducted a search inventory of the vehicle. In the back left side of the vehicle, alongside the defendant's black sneakers and black backpack, Trooper Drach located a large amount of clear and colored small plastic baggies, containing a white powdery substance. Trooper Drach took possession of the suspected narcotics and transported them to the FHP Deland Station for testing. Upon Trooper Drach’s arrival, he made contact with me and notified me the substance had been tested. Trooper Drach also located a magazine with eight hollow-point rounds of ammunition of a 9mm caliber inside of the black backpack belonging to the def. Inside the backpack, a credit card belonging to the def was located. Trooper Drach informed me the substance yielded a positive test for cocaine and fentanyl weighing over 3g. Trooper Drach’s incident report with more details will be attached to my arrest packet.
