Some 36 people were killed in clashes in Basra, Iraq's second largest city, after cultists opened fire on a police patrol. Police torched a mosque belonging to the cult after militants fired at officers from within the house of worship, authorities said. They also shot at Shiite worshippers taking part in Ashoura observances, according to Basra authorities. No worshippers were injured. Basra police said those killed included two policemen, five gunmen and two civilians, including a 10-year-old boy and a female doctor. He also said six police were wounded and 30 militants were detained, including 22 who were wounded. The leader of the group in Basra, was among those who died police said. Police said 21 members of the group were detained. The attack came a year after Iraqi and American troops foiled a similar plot during Shiite Islam's most important holiday. Al-Qaida in Iraq was expected to be the main threat against this year's Ashoura processions, which Sunni Arab militants have repeatedly targeted with car bombings and mortar attacks that have killed hundreds since 2003, but it was Shiites who struck on Friday. The violence also spread to Nasiriyah, about 320 kilometres southeast of Baghdad, where police said at least 10 people were killed - seven policemen including two senior officers, two female civilians and one gunman. Around 50 people were injured after a gunmen stormed the building of a quick reaction force in the city, police said. The attack in Nasiriyah began when militants carrying yellow flags or wearing yellow headbands, the cult's colour, fired mortar rounds at a police station in Nasiriyah, and then engaged police in a shootout. The violence began around midday and was continuing into the evening, as US-led coalition jet fighters and helicopters were seen opening fire on a Nasiriyah police station seized by cult gunmen. There were conflicting accounts of what exactly happened, but it appeared the militants were the same Soldiers of Heaven cult that mounted a ferocious attack nearly a year ago after Iraqi security forces raided its lands near Najaf to foil an alleged plot to slaughter pilgrims and leading clerics during Ashoura. The assault was launched as hundreds of thousands of Shiites observed the Ashoura holiday, honouring their most beloved saint.
