First performance at Cadogan Hall, London with The London Phoenix Orchestra conducted by Levon Parikian. Commissioned in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the artist Ivan Aivazovsky. http://www.graphicine.com/ivan-aivazo... Writing the Ninth Wave has been a great journey into the world of the artist Ivan Aivazovsky and his painting The Ninth Wave which inspired the composition process. For this commission I had the luxury of writing for a full symphony orchestra with its immense palette of colours and possibilities alongside the expressive beauty of a solo violin. The painting depicts the aftermath of a shipwreck in high seas with the survivors clinging onto parts of the wreckage. Despite this seemingly hopeless situation the artist conveys a spirit of hope through his use of light and vivid colour. We, the viewer have a strong sense that the victims will survive and live to tell the tale of their miraculous salvation. The style of the music in my mind could only be one thing, a large late Romantic score with Russian and Armenian elements. The tiny violin pitted against the huge orchestra represents the ship and its survivors fighting the ocean. The music starts with calm seas but soon gives way to darkening skies, storms and eventually the ninth wave, which according to maritime folklore is the mother of all waves. The work ends in a golden calm as the survivors find salvation and peace. Video and recording by Boris Bizjak / @bizjakboris
