What role does good data have in telling – or at least enhancing – a regular news story? And what are the benefits to fact checkers of being able to work closely with statutory statistical agencies? This idea was crystallised by the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency (NISRA) working with broadcast media outlets to ensure official statistics were being reported accurately during the UK General Election in December 2019. Since then, statistics have become even more important and their use even more prevalent during the coronavirus pandemic. Recorded on Monday 29 June 2020 at 10am, BST (5am EDT), Allan Leonard (FactCheckNI) chaired this discussion with Niall O’Neill (statistician at Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency) and John Campbell (BBC Northern Ireland’s Economics and Business Editor). Edited & produced by Alan Meban. Find out more about the work of FactCheckNI at factcheckni.org
