O Magnum Mysterium

O Magnum Mysterium "O magnum mysterium" is a responsorial chant from the Matins of Christmas in the Roman Brevary. The plainchant melody, celebrating the mystery of the Savior being born in a humble stable, has been sung since the Middle Ages, but the text has been popular with many composers, with the earliest known settings published in the mid-1500s. William Byrd, Palestrina and Tomás Luis de Victoria are only a few of the the well known Renaissance composers who set the text; while composers through the 19th century also set the chant text, though none of the most prominent figures in 19th century music. The text regained popularity in the 20th century, with new settings by Francis Poulenc and others. The Choral Public Domain Library lists over 50 settings.
