A fiery Belper Derby under the lights at Christchurch Meadow – and what a cup tie it turned out to be! Before kick-off, I caught up with Belper Town manager Lee and Belper United Goalkeeper Coach Luke, who both spoke about their seasons so far and the huge importance of this Derbyshire Senior Cup clash. Bragging rights, momentum, and a place in the next round all on the line! Inside the ground, the Town faithful were making some serious noise, creating a brilliant derby atmosphere. Belper Town thought they’d taken an early lead with a header that hit the net – celebrations everywhere – only for it to be ruled out for offside… even I didn’t spot it at first! Town kept pushing and the pressure paid off: a free-kick on the edge of the box saw Belper United reduced to 10 men after a professional foul. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Town finally made it count, poking home a cross at the back post to go 1-0 up. But United responded instantly! Straight from kick-off a deflected volley flew in to make it 1-1 at HT, stunning the home end. The second half exploded into life with Belper Town retaking the lead within 30 seconds. They added another soon after, and tensions rose behind the goal with stewards having to intervene as the atmosphere turned spicy. United pulled one back in the final 10 minutes to set up a nervy finish, but Town killed the game off with a late fourth to seal a 4-2 Derby day victory and progress to the next round!
