West Highland Way, Day 5: Sick & Surrounded by Tents

Day 5 takes us from Bridge of Orchy to Kingshouse – a shorter stretch (about 12 miles / 19 km) that finally gives our tired legs a break and reminds us why we love this trail. We start with a gentle climb out of Bridge of Orchy for sunrise views over Loch Tulla, then follow the old drovers’ road past Inveroran and onto the vast, open expanse of Rannoch Moor. With the first blue skies we’ve seen all week, the Black Mount peaks appear in all their glory, and morale soars. Despite the easier terrain, the landscape feels remote and wild. We pass the legendary Glencoe Ski Centre sign and catch our first glimpse of Buachaille Etive Mòr—one of Scotland’s most photographed mountains—before descending to the historic Kingshouse Hotel. Tonight’s “wild” camp is anything but quiet: dozens of tents have sprung up in every patch of grass, turning Kingshouse into a mini‑festival. Cue my best “How is THIS wild camping?” face, a few laughs with fellow hikers, and a well‑earned rest under a clear Highland sky.
