Rochester Victoria - Silo Art Trail - Murals - Heritage & River Walks Rochester is a charming rural town in northern Victoria, located on the banks of the Campaspe River. Once a service town for the surrounding farming region, it is now known for its incredible murals, silo art and relaxed country atmosphere. Rochester is located approximately 180 kilometres north of Melbourne. 00:00 Introduction 01:10 Rochester Town Centre, Coffee and Murals 02:34 Rochester Silo Art 03:40 Rochester Sports Museum 04:40 Campaspe River Walk 05:30 Opperman Statue & Rochester Mural Park 07:00 Rochester Heritage Buildings During our visit to Rochester, we wandered through town admiring the street art, enjoyed a coffee at 7 Beans café, saw the amazing painted silos, and visited the Sport Museum. We also wandered along the Campaspe River Walk, saw more murals at Mural Park and some lovely heritage buildings. Rochester Town Centre The tree-lined town centre of Rochester has cafes, hotels, a bakery, supermarket and interesting shops to browse in. There are also some colourful murals on the sides of buildings and down laneways. On Iddles Lane, Tim Bowtell has painted the story of Rochester-born former homicide detective Ron Iddles OAM APM. The mural also features Ron’s twin brother, Barry Iddles, an international chef and other family members. 7 Beans Coffee After admiring the murals, we stopped for coffee and cake at 7 Beans Coffee, a lovely café in the centre of town. Rochester Silo Art Rochester is home to some fantastic silo art, and is part of the North East Victorian Silo Art Trail. The Rochester Silos were painted by renowned mural artist Jimmy D’Vate in 2018 and 2021. On the tall silo is a Squirrel Glider, a small, nocturnal marsupial that is native to eastern Australia. On the shorter silo is an Azure Kingfisher, a colourful bird with bright blue and orange plumage that is found near rivers, creeks, and wetlands. On the back of this silo is a Platypus mural. The duck-billed platypus is one of Australia’s most unique and fascinating animals and can be seen in the Campaspe River. There is also a mural of the New Holland Honeyeater with its bold black, white, and yellow plumage. Rochester Sports Museum Located at the Railway Station is the Rochester Sports Museum, which is open Thursday to Sunday from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. The museum showcases an impressive collection of over 4,000 pieces of sporting memorabilia gathered by local legend John Forbes OAM KStJ during his time with PUMA Australia. Highlights include items from sporting greats such as Adam Gilchrist, Greg Norman, Martina Navratilova, Dennis Lillee, Herb Elliott and Cliff Young, along with interesting stories he shares in the on-site theatre. Campaspe River Walk We enjoyed a relaxing walk along the banks of the Campaspe River. It’s a peaceful place to wander, watch the birds and simply sit by the river and enjoy the peace. While wandering around town and by the river, we saw some interesting carved wooden sculptures, created by Brandon Kroon. Mural Park On the way to Mural Park, we stopped at Opperman Gardens and saw the sculpture of Australian cyclist and politician, Sir Hubert Opperman. Opperman was born in Rochester and held more than 100 distance cycling records, including the Australian Road Cycling titles, and went on to become a Government Minister. Every year in March, Mural Park in Rochester hosts the Mural Festival, where artists spend a week creating large-scale murals measuring 2.1 by 4.8 metres. The murals from previous years are permanently displayed in Mural Park, complete with plaques recognising the artists who created them. We enjoyed wandering around and looking at these amazing artworks. Rochester Heritage Buildings As we continued to wander around the town centre, we saw some lovely heritage buildings, the highlights were: The Rochester Shire Hall, which was built in 1892, and has Gothic-style characteristics. The Shamrock Hotel, which is a stunning double-story red brick hotel with ornate verandahs in the centre of town; it was built in 1912. The Rochester Post Office opened in 1863 and is still used as a Post Office today. If you want more information and places to Wander * Explore * Discover go to - https://www.wanderexplorediscover.com/
