Learn about Aquilli Metzli Cooperative, a community-based project focused on food sovereignty, traditional maize cultivation, and nixtamalized masa production in Humboldt County, California. In this membership information session, we explain how the cooperative works, what it means to be a member, and how community members can participate in growing corn, maintaining milpas, and producing fresh stone-ground nixtamalized masa. We also talk about our goals around local agriculture, traditional foodways, cooperative governance, and building resilient community food systems. Aquilli Metzli is rooted in the traditions of milpa agriculture, where maize is grown as part of an interconnected ecological system that supports biodiversity, soil health, and community nourishment. Our cooperative brings people together to grow corn collectively, share knowledge, and make fresh masa for tortillas, tamales, and other traditional foods. If you are interested in local food systems, corn farming, nixtamalization, cooperative agriculture, food justice, or community-supported farming, this video will give you a full overview of how Aquilli Metzli works and how to get involved. Members help steward the milpa, participate in cooperative decision-making, and receive maize and masa from the harvest. Together we are working to rebuild community corn culture and regional food resilience in Northern California. Learn more about membership and upcoming events by connecting with Aquilli Metzli.
