[Sorano 2022] Walk in the Medieval town | In the province of Grosseto, southern Tuscany (Italy)

Sorano is located in a hilly area east of Grosseto. The town is mentioned for the first time in an official deed dating back to 1172 stipulated between the local Lords Giacomo and Ranieri di Bartolomeo. Starting from 1210, by decision of Emperor Otto IV, the town became a possession of the Aldobrandeschi family whose dominion lasted until 1293 when, for dynastic reasons, it passed to the Orsini family. From the impregnable fortress of Sorano overhanging the valley below, the Orsini were able to repel the ferocious attacks of the republic of Siena several times, surrendering to the powerful neighbor only in 1417. In 1555, with the fall of the Republic of Siena, the Orsini returned to power, subsequently transforming the fort into a real renaissance fortress, thanks to Count Niccolò. At the beginning of the 17th century, Sorano became a domain of the Medici and remained so until the advent of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany (18th century).
