I've been excited to do these next few episodes! This week we're starting a three part series on the archaeology of Greek religion. Here I give a general overview of how we approach religion in archaeological contexts, and some of the pitfalls and challenges we often face. This episode especially examines the evolution of religious expression from the Bronze Age through the Classical period, focusing on votive offerings, sacred architecture, and the intersection of religion with state power. Religion is inherently intertwined with tradition, politics, and daily life in the Greek world. By looking at household deities and local hero cults and the panhellenic sanctuaries like Delphi and Olympia, we can understand a lot about how cult was embodied and practiced. Overview of topics in this episode: 🏺 Greek Religious Practices - The rituals and beliefs that defined ancient Greek religion ⛪ Sacred Architecture -The evolution of temples and sacred spaces from domestic architecture 🦸 Hero Cults and Worship -The significance of hero worship in local Greek communities 🌍 Panhellenic Sanctuaries -The importance of sites like Delphi and Olympia 🔮 Mythology and Iconography -The myths and symbols that permeated Greek culture ⚖️ Religion and State Power -How religion was intertwined with Greek politics and society I'd love to hear your thoughts on Greek religion and cult in the comments below!
