This week I'm continuing our discussion of ancient Greek religion and exploring the various kinds of sanctuaries across the Aegean. Whether they be Civic, Extra Urban or Panhellenic, sanctuaries formed a cultic and political foundation to the Greek world. I begin by examining the unique Graeco-Egyptian site of Naukratis, where Greek settlers forged a unified identity as Hellenes, before exploring sites like the Acropolis, Perachora and the Heraion of Samos which served as critical points of cultural exchange and political neutrality. We'll also explore how votive offerings reflect the shifting ideologies in Greek society and examine the significance of Panhellenic Sanctuaries like Olympia and Delphi in shaping Greek identity and competition among city-states. I conclude by explaining how religious sites were not only spiritual centers but also key players in the social, political, and economic landscapes of Ancient Greece. Overview of topics in this episode: 🏛️ Civic Sanctuaries -The Athenian Acropolis and its role in showcasing Athenian imperial power. 🛡️ Graeco-Egyptian Interaction -The unique cultural exchange at Naukratis, the first Greek settlement in Egypt. ⚓ Extra Urban Sanctuaries -The strategic importance of Perachora and the Heraion of Samos. 💎 Votive Offerings -How votive deposits at temples reflect changes in Greek social and religious ideologies. 🏅 Panhellenic Sanctuaries -The significance of Olympia and Delphi in fostering Greek unity and competition. I'd love to hear your thoughts on these sanctuaries in the comments below! Sources & Bibliography: Ekroth G. 2017: Bare bones: zooarchaeology and Greek sacrifice, in S. Hitch and I.
