Ajay Saini, a Professor at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, through his undying and unparalleled interest in social anthropology, draws comparisons between our urban way of life and the lifestyle we often dismiss as “primitive”. He does this by analyzing the native inhabitants of the Nicobarese islands, as well as focusing on the structure of other hunting-gathering societies. The idea behind this talk explores how these marginalized and primitive societies feature egalitarianism, peace, co-operation and altruism, which in turn can influence models for urban societies. Ajay is a social science nomad who believes that the world is made of stories. He travels to remote places both in India and internationally, using his insights and discoveries to contribute to The Hindu and Economic and Political Weekly publishings. His research interests gravitate towards historically isolated indigenous communities, biopolitics and government studies. He has also done extensive research on Northeast Indian politics and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. He has a Doctorate in Social Work from Tata Institute Of Social Sciences (Mumbai), where he also works as an Assistant Professor. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
