Have you ever heard of Gertrude Ederle? She’s pretty awesome! She’s a Deaf female swimmer who’s an Olympics champion and a world record holder for 5 events. Fun fact- Gertrude used motorcycle goggles to protect her eyes from the salty water when she swam across the English Channel! She taught Deaf children how to swim after accomplishing her own swim career. She passed away in 2003 at the age of 98. Such an inspiration she was! - Transcript: She became the first woman, even better, first Deaf woman to swim across the English Channel. England here. France here. The water (Channel) in between. Gertrude swam across that. It’s 21 miles across. It took her 14 hours and 31 minutes to swim across. What’s even more amazing is that she made a record too in the year 1926 with her time. She beat all of the men’s records in the past. She held her record from 1926 to 1950 because someone else broke her record. Her nickname was “Queen of the Waves.” She dedicated her life to teaching Deaf children in New York City how to swim. What an inspiration. - Sponsored by Global VRS - #TheBulb Transcript: www.dailymoth.com/blog/deaf-history-gertrude-ederle
