Battle Royal matches were nothing new when the Royal Rumble made it's debut but what separated the Rumble was the fact that superstars had staggered entrances. Introducing new superstars throughout the match made the Royal Rumble much more exciting than a standard battle royal, resulting in Royal Rumble matches happening every year and the match type getting it's own Pay Per View in January. In the year 2000, WCW decided to produce a Royal Rumble style match for the very first time, known as "Countdown to Armageddon". This match took place on free TV (WCW Thunder) and it featured 29 superstars trying to earn a title shot. Wrestlers who competed in the match included Sting, Kevin Nash, Mike Awesome, Ernest Miller, Konnan and Rey Mysterio.
