POVLA 0011 In this episode, I travel north out of Los Angeles, on a journey deep into the conifer forests of the Southern Sierra Nevada Mountains. I am headed to one of my favorite places; a wild, open space called Monache Meadow. The journey begins north out of Los Angeles on California State route 14. I pass by Placerita Canyon, Santa Clarita, and the Vasquez Rocks, then over the San Gabriel Mountains to Palmdale, where Lockheed Martin's infamous Skunkworks building dominates the town. Skunkworks is known for such top secret projects as the U-2 Spyplane, SR-71 Blackbird, and the F-117 Nighthawk Stealth Fighter, and is also the main contractor behind the F-22 raptor and the F-35 Lightning II. After Palmdale, I head north to the old railroad town of Mojave, home to the Alta Wind Energy Center and the Mojave Air and Spaceport. The Spaceport was used to launch the first private space flight of SpaceShipOne back in 2004. Continuing north, I pass through the beautiful Red Rock Canyon State Park and plateau off near the Dove Springs - Butterbredt OHV area, and finally make a stop for gas at Pearsonville, CA. Three miles north of Pearsonville, I drive the winding road up Nine Mile Canyon, crossing over the Nine Mile Canyon Siphon, a 105 year old pipe that is part of the 230 mile long Los Angeles Aqueduct. At the top of Nine Mile Canyon, I enter into the Kern Plateau, a massive area containing over 500,000 acres of mountainous forests. The Kern Plateau is absolutely stunning and worth visiting. The road continues to the little community of Kennedy Meadows, where i stop for the night. Kennedy Meadows was a sesasonal home to native American tribes for thousands of years. The area was used in the 1800's by sheep herders and Miners, and the area was homesteaded in the early 1900's by some wild characters.
