Welcome to Day 1 of 30 Days of our Beginner Spine Rehabilitation Program. My name is Dr. Kevin Mao, Physical Therapist, and owner of Balance and Body Restoration Physical Therapy and Massage, a clinic located in the East Bay of California in a city called Dublin. At our clinic, we specialize in working with people who struggle with chronic pain, including back issues, neck and shoulder pain, and also more severe injuries such as degenerative disc disease and herniated discs. I initially started creating some videos for my patients to give them an extra resource so they could do their rehabilitation exercises at home, but with my own personal coaching and instruction. However, I decided that it would be a better idea to share some of these programs with as many people as I feel could possibly benefit from the same advice. Timestamps: 0:00 introduction 1:01 Topics for Day 1 1:34 Why "Breathing" 2:09 The Two Main Systems of Breathing 3:40 How breathing "improperly" can lead to chronic pain 5:22 Exercise 1: Breathing Assessment and Corrective Strategy 9:43 Exercise 2: Introducing the "Cat-Cow" 11:00 The "GOAL" of Stretching 11:52 Exercise 2A: Diving Deeper into the "Cow" 14:55 Exercise 2B: Diving Deeper into the "Cat" 18:51 Putting It All Together Exercise, as most people know, is one of the best resources we have to combat some of the most common underlying causes of back pain, such as: Muscle and joint stiffness Weakness and lack of endurance Poor body awareness and body mechanics However, having worked with many patients who struggle with chronic pain over the past 12 years, many of my patients KNOW they need to do some form of stretching, or exercise but are just hesitant to do so for various reasons, such as: They are worried about doing the wrong exercises that could make their pain worse. Unsure about the proper form, or technique They are intimidated by most of the exercises they see on youtube since it looks too intimidating, difficult, and intense. They don't know if the exercises will actually work and give them the results they are hoping for. To try to solve some of these issues. I created this 30-day program as if I was personally working with a patient for a month straight, to guide someone who is a complete beginner, and likely struggling with pain, stiffness, weakness, or just simply a lack of trust within their own body... And guide them through what I believe is the safest, simplest, yet most comprehensive and effective program that I have personally developed over the past 12 years as a clinician, working in the trenches with people who have struggled with these problems for years. In each video, we will share new exercises, introduce key concepts to help you understand WHY we are instructing this exercise, and progressively increase the difficulty (but still keep it at a beginner level (with no weights, or crazy acrobatic exercises). If you find a video that you personally like to do, then just stick with it, and while I suggest, at some point you try to work through the videos as much as you can, just remember to stay within your limits and don't rush too fast if you feel your body isn't ready. My only goal is to simply share some important lessons that have worked for me, and my patients, at helping them reduce their pain, improve their mobility, re-instill confidence back into their bodies, and ultimately live a better quality of life. Even though this is an exercise program that is designed to be as safe, and as simple as possible, please understand that this program is NOT meant to be a substitute for professional advice. When I am working with a patient, in the clinic, we are ensuring that every step of the way that their body is ready, able, and SAFE to exercise. And that exercise, in my opinion, should not be meant to "fix" or "cure" pain, or other medical issues. Instead, it is designed to help people increase their mobility, strength, and body awareness, which in turn, can help with certain TYPES of back pain. With that said, I urge you, before taking any actions based on this information, we encourage you to consult with your physician. The use or reliance of any information contained in this video is solely at your own risk.
