A word from Ruth: Everytime I bake this bread the smells just take me back to my childhood. Looking back our kitchen always seemed to have the aroma of freshly baked bread and cakes. My mum was a wonderful cook and she loved nothing more than rustling up a treat or two. Nothing fancy or expensive but Victoria Sandwich along with iced topped buns were regularly there when I arrived back from school. Now my grandchildren love to do the same and can be found using lots of Norah’s ‘old’ recipes ... I often get a phone call from them asking .. ‘how do I make your shortcrust pastry Granny? Of course it’s not my shortcrust pastry at all it’s their Great Grandmothers!
