Mind, Body is the bow, asana is the arrow, and the soul is the target. & I start my session with one of the well know yoga sutras of Patanjali, infact two not one.. Chapter no. 2 verse no. 46 i.e“Sthiram Sukham Asanam” i.e an asana or posture that is stable & comfortable & chapter no. 2 verse no. 47 say “prayatna-shaithilya-ananta-samapatti-bhyam, i.e “Perfection in asana is achieved when the effort to perform it, becomes effortless and the Infinite is reached.” the whole answer of yogic breathing lies in this sutra Namaste friends, I am Ritesh and today we finally finish the 5 & the last Series on Science of Breathing we have already covered the 1) introduction on science of breathing 2) Chest Breathing or Thoracic Breathing 3) Belly Breathing or Abdominal Breathing 4) Yogic Breathing or Diaphgramatic Breathing & today we will see what kind of poses or asanas pair well during inhale or exhale while doing the yogic breathing and also we will see if we do a belly breathing what happens. When should I inhale & why, when should I exhale & why with anatomical explanation that will help you to practice safe, avoid injuries, when you practice your asanas. Synchronising the yogic breathing in asana lifts the practice to a whole new level. In fact, all the corrections in alignment in our asana is meaningless unless there is a stability in your posture & smooth consistent, conscious yogic breathing. Yoga teachers or practitioners, do know about yogic breathing, but limited to Pranayam only. But friends you can use this method of pranayama into your asana practice too. Friends the perfection in a yoga pose is not measured by our ability to reach our toes, or to bend backwards 180 degrees, or to twist the spine 360 degrees! Well, Maharishi Patanjali does not give you alignment instructions of how the body should be in a particular posture. But he does suggest about our internal experience & that is the expression of perfection. Simply put, a pose where the yoga practitioner is in extreme discomfort, his breath is erratic, he is pushing himself beyond his limits. God knows where he wants to reach and for what ? As if touching the toes will lead him to moksha or liberation. Friends this is not an asana, but mere physical exercise or an Instagram pose, regardless of how wonderful it appears from the outside or how photogenic is your smile!, he simply guides and says “Sthirma Sukham Asanam” ie. are you stable and comfortable & eventually your yoga practice should lead to an effortless practice. well if not, than thats not an asana & friends yogic breathing or diaphragmatic breathing gives you that stability. The rhythm of one’s breath is a true indicator of ease or struggle. When there is stability, ease and effortlessness in the body you are in yoga, we can easily control the breath to be in harmony. So now lets understand when to inhale, & don’t forget you yogic or diaphragmatic breathing as we had discussed in Science of breathing series no. 4.
