Ascent of the 5546 m high Chhukung Ri with son Christoph and Bikram Tamang on March 26, 2014. Experience report: In preparation for the planned ascent of Island Peak, climbing a higher 5000 m peak was necessary for further acclimatization. Chhukung Ri (5546 m) or Chhukung Tse (5886 m) on the northern mountain ridge came into consideration for this. Starting from Chhukung (4730 m) we first made our way towards the saddle, that separates the main from the southern summit. From there, continue in block climbing over the south-west flank, up to the main summit (5546 m). Magnificent panoramic views of the valleys and mountains all around and fantastic insights into the avalanche-prone south faces of Nuptse and Lhotse, lying directly in front of us. The nearby ridge of Island Peak, which was interesting for us, was also very easy to see. After hours of staying at the summit, we climbed back over the saddle and the southern summit (5404 m) down to the valley.
