For this reason, Harris’s journey gained particular importance, as it offered a direct field account of the country during a complex historical period marked by the overlap of Ottoman influence and the authority of local tribes. In this book, Harris does more than record simple travel notes. He attempts to present a broad picture of Yemen through its geography, history, and society. He begins by describing Yemen’s location and natural boundaries, then distinguishes between two very different geographical worlds: the dry coastal plains of Tihama on one side and the fertile mountain highlands on the other. Through this contrast, the author explains many aspects of economic and social life in the country, such as agriculture in the mountains and camel breeding in the plains. Harris also devotes several pages to Yemen’s cities and ports, including Hodeidah, Mocha, Taiz, and Sana’a. He discusses their commercial and political history, especially the role of the port of Mocha in the global coffee trade before its decline after the rise of Aden in the nineteenth century. His observations also highlight the relationship between Ottoman authority and the tribal structure of Yemeni society, which combines long-standing tribal traditions with urban life in the cities.
