The Erie Gauge War was a historic skirmish that occurred in 1853 between the Erie and Northeast Railroad and the citizens of Erie, Pennsylvania. The conflict arose due to the railroad changing the width of their tracks, which threatened the livelihood of the town's businesses. Mayor Alfred King deputized a group of citizens, led by Morrow Lowry, to rip up the tracks and bridges in protest. Highlights In 1853, the Erie and Northeast Railroad changed the width of their tracks, causing inconvenience to travelers and threatening the livelihood of businesses in Erie, Pennsylvania. Mayor Alfred King passed an ordinance allowing the police to remove any rail crossings over city streets, but the citizens demanded he take further action. The citizens, led by Morrow Lowry, were deputized as special police officers and disguised themselves as women to rip up the tracks and bridges. The conflict was known as the Erie Gauge War. The skirmish arose during a time when many smaller railroad companies controlled the Northeastern United States and legal battles between railroads and municipalities were common. The forced stop in Erie for travelers along the rail line turned into big business for hotels, theaters, and street vendors. The conflict ended with the railroad company relenting and agreeing to lay the wider tracks. Music from #InAudio: https://inaudio.org/ Music by Mokka Music by Infraction Music by Pixabay
