In this week's video, I'll take you through everything you'll need to know in order to start applying this concept to your solos! We'll start out by learning what a melodic cell is and how we can apply them to our solos. I'll show you all the permutations, or forms, of each cell for both major and minor forms. Then, we'll see how we can use different groupings as substitutions for accessing different parts of the upper structure harmony. We'll do this by using the groupings from different chord tones and creating a line over a static C major vamp. Then, we'll apply these ideas over the changes to the jazz standard, Lady Bird, to see how effective they can be at playing over chords. Finally, I'll show you an etude over the same chord changes that combines these melodic cell ideas with a more typical approach to bebop language.
